Alternative Poster Illustration

Drive

Acrylic + Oil, 11x14in Gesso on wooden panel

This was a personal project to create an alternative poster for a movie or show. I chose the movie, Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. It’s one of my favorite movies and I loved the cinematography and color used throughout. His character is never named, and he remains the mysterious, quiet character who finds jobs as a getaway driver for criminals, and is not a stranger to violence. One day he meets his neighbor, Irene (played by Carey Mulligan), and ends up falling for her.

I chose a particular scene from the movie that was toward the end. Nothing is said, but the silence and imagery says everything. The 2 characters are in an elevator with a hitman, and the Driver acts to save Irene from harm. As the Driver’s violent nature comes out, Irene exits the elevator in shock, and they are both separated physically by the elevator doors. The Driver knows he can never be with her and as the elevator doors slowly close, so does his dreams of a simpler life with Irene.
